Who can apply for Hungarian citizenship?

There are various ways of applying for Hungarian citizenship, even if you were born in Australia or New Zealand. We’ve provided summaries from the Hungarian Embassy in Australia here to assist you below.

BY DESCENT

HUNGARIAN CITIZENSHIP BY DESCENT – HUNGARIAN PARENTS OR ANCESTORS

Hungarian citizenship is based on the principle of descent (jus sanguinis – “right of blood”). If someone’s parent or grandparent was a Hungarian citizen, the person is most likely already a Hungarian citizen as well.

The procedure to determine whether or not someone is already a Hungarian citizen by descent is called “citizenship verification”.

  • Any person with Hungarian roots, no matter whether they were born in Hungary or abroad
  • One or both of your parents were Hungarian citizens at the time of your birth
  • You have Hungarian ancestors (parents, grandparents, or further back) who were Hungarian citizens
  • For applicants born before 1 October 1957, only the father’s Hungarian citizenship is considered

You will be required to prove that your parents or further ancestors were Hungarian citizens through documents like birth or marriage certificates, passports, or other documents that can verify their Hungarian identity.

BY BIRTH

HUNGARIAN CITIZENSHIP BY BIRTH

All persons born in Hungary to at least one Hungarian citizen parent are granted Hungarian citizenship by birth. Hungary does not automatically grant citizenship based solely on being born on Hungarian territory (jus soli).

BY NATURALISATION

HUNGARIAN CITIZENSHIP BY NATURALISATION

Foreign nationals can apply for Hungarian citizenship through naturalisation after meeting specific requirements including continuous residence, language proficiency, and integration requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Although it may seem daunting at first, applying for Hungarian citizenship is a fairly straightforward process for most. Here are some of the questions which we commonly get asked by our clients.

Hungarian Translation Services

Do I need a lawyer or migration service?

No! Most our clients apply for citizenship on their own without engaging any lawyers or citizenship services. It is entirely possible, and cheaper, to follow the steps on the Hungarian government website and apply on your own.

How do I get the required documents?

You can ask family in Hungary, or email/call civil registry offices in Hungary yourself and request that they provide official documents such as birth certificates from your ancestors.

Do I need paper or digital translations?

The Hungarian embassy seems to prefer printed and ‘wet stamped’ certified translations, so we always mail copies out to clients when we know that they are applying for Hungarian citizenship.
